The inspiration for this box began with two others:

Two boxes of “cremains” that were Bentley and Beemer’s new forever-homes.

My gaze kept drifting back to them. Yes, they were heavy with incinerated bone and fur; but they most definitely did not contain the only-ness—the “essence”—that made B&B uniquely who they were.

Those boxes made me antsy. I felt hauntedly disloyal. Like I’d left my Mom-job unfinished.

Call it California woo-woo but I could sense B&B’s restless little spirits searching for—imploring me to point them toward—that soft, comfy forever home I had promised years before. And delivered until their last breaths.

For two pooches accustomed to icy beef-broth slushies on summer days and memory-foam dawg-beds in every room, an unimaginative, impersonal (brass nameplate notwithstanding) ash-stuffed mini-coffin wasn’t ever gonna be that place.

My adult granddaughter, who knew I was struggling mightily (and is big into art therapy/rituals for healing), suggested I create a one-of-a-kind, fits-their-personality “spirit home” for each of them.
